The history of the Melbourne Olympics
In 1956, the first Olympic Games was held in Australia in Melbourne. Along with the first Olympic Games ever held in the Southern Hemisphere, it was also the beginning of Television in Australia. Only around two months after the release of Mainstream Professional Television in Australia, the Melbourne Olympics was held.
The Olympics opening Ceremony was held on the 22nd of November 1956 and the Duke of Edinburgh was present during the commencement of the Games. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was covered by all of the television channels that were present at the time, but the Television channel that got exclusive broadcasting was OB, a channel that was later made part of ABC (Australian Broadcasting Association). This channel had launched only three days before the Olympic Games had commenced.
Coverage
The entire Olympic Games was done by 2 OB vans, each with 3 cameras, only having a zoom lens and the other devoted mainly to graphics cards. There was only enough cable to cover 2 locations, so they had to pack up and move the vans several times a day. Role of TV in the Melbourne Olympics
The role of TV in the Melbourne Olympics was very important as it was able to send out visual images as well as sound which was very good for that time as people were able to get the feeling of being physically there through images. The role of TV in the Olympics has also been used to record and leave a memory, which at that time was much better than a photograph as this was able to record motion. Significance of the broadcasting of the Olympic Games
The significance of the broadcasting of the Olympic Games is very important. This is because if we did not have the broadcasting system, there would have been no information about the games whatsoever. Also with the footage, the citizens of Australia could also view visually the scene at the Olympic Stadium without them physically being there. This was a great advantage as it was much better than just listening to a radio and finding out the results and visualizing a race without you physically being there as there may be quite a few misconceptions.
However, not very many people today find this very significant, this is because it was very hard to find information regarding about recording of the Melbourne Olympics.
